The Points Daily: October 6, 2026
Quick Summary
Delta is running limited-time comfort upgrades and flight sales, Marriott points are at a rare discount, IHG just made points cheaper to buy through a cancellation loophole, Emirates opened business-class award inventory to Dubai, and Chase may soon transfer to two new airline programs. Plus: a United status match window closes in 9 days, and a new IHG card tops their overhaul.
Delta Is Offering $1 Comfort Upgrades and Up to 40% Off Flights
What happened: Delta is selling comfort upgrades starting at $1 on Alaska routes and up to 40% off Seattle flights through October 8. The Alaska offer is actually $12 round trip minimum—the $1 applies only to nonstops to Anchorage or Fairbanks and select one-stop flights to 4 Florida airports. Seattle passengers get the steeper discounts: 40% off Hawaii, 30% off dozens of domestic nonstops, but bookings must be round trip.
Why it matters: Comfort upgrades include extra legroom, early boarding, and free drinks. If you're already flying those routes, the price is negligible.
TPD take: Check Alaska routes if you live there; Seattle deals are solid if you have Hawaii or domestic plans in the next two days. The $1 upgrade is a curiosity more than a game-changer.

Marriott Points at Rare 55% Bonus Discount
What happened: Marriott is selling Bonvoy points at 0.81 cents each with a 55% bonus through November 23. Buy up to 200,000 points; minimum purchase of 2,000 required for the bonus. This is one of the steepest discounts Marriott has offered.
Why it matters: Most people earn Marriott points through credit cards or spending. Buying at under a cent per point only works if you already know what you're redeeming for.
TPD take: This is useful if you're chasing a specific high-value property or transferring to airline partners. Don't buy speculatively. For casual redemptions, earning through cards remains more efficient.

IHG Launches Points & Cash Discount—and a Loophole
What happened: IHG rolled out a Points & Cash promotion offering around 15% off the cash portion of hybrid bookings through November 2 (for stays through November 16). When you cancel, you get a full refund in points based on the total points value, not the discounted cash you paid.
Why it matters: This creates an arbitrage opportunity: book, take the cash discount, then cancel for a points refund. Effectively, you're buying IHG points at around half a cent each.
TPD take: This is pure mechanics—book, cancel immediately, pocket the points discount. It works because the refund uses the full points value, not the reduced cash amount you paid. Check your targeted offer first; not all accounts qualify.

Emirates Business Class to Dubai With Wide Availability
What happened: Emirates opened business-class award seats to Dubai for up to 7 passengers on nonstops from U.S. cities, valid October 2026–February 2027. Chicago is getting the refurbished 777; Orlando will debut the new A350 business class. Book via Emirates Skywards using points from Amex, Capital One, Citi, Bilt, or Marriott.
Why it matters: Emirates business class includes shower spas and bar service. Award availability at this scale and cabin is rare.
TPD take: If you hold Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou, or Marriott points and want to experience Emirates' best cabin, the inventory window is open now. This doesn't last long.

Chase May Add Qantas and Cathay Pacific as Ultimate Rewards Partners
What happened: Chase is rumored to add Qantas Frequent Flyer and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles as 1-to-1 Ultimate Rewards transfer partners. Both are already available through Citi, Capital One, and others, so this would fill a gap rather than break new ground.
Why it matters: Cathay is useful for oneworld redemptions, but Amex cut its transfer ratio to 5-to-4 earlier this year. Chase at 1-to-1 would be better.
TPD take: This is a rumor, but if true, it gives Ultimate Rewards holders a oneworld option they currently lack. Cathay is the better of the two for value. Not transformative, but solid to have in the tool kit.

Steal of the Day: United Status Match for American and Delta Flyers
What happened: United is matching elite status for American Airlines and Delta flyers exclusively through October 15. U.S. residents only. This is separate from United's regular open-enrollment match.
Why it matters: 9 days left. If you hold elite status with either carrier and want to test United's offer, now is the window.
TPD take: Quick action item if you qualify. The deadline is hard; don't wait.

Card of the Day: New IHG One Rewards Premier Select
What happened: Chase and IHG overhauled their card lineup. The new top-tier option is the IHG One Rewards Premier Select Credit Card at $350 annual fee with up to $300 in annual IHG Food & Beverage Rewards.
Why it matters: If you're staying at IHG properties regularly, the card is worth evaluating once full terms are public.
TPD take: Full details matter here. The $300 dining credit only works if you're actually eating at IHG properties. Evaluate against the annual fee and your spend patterns.
